Manistee originally started a run club in 2014 named “Twisted Blister” which was created by local people. Runners of all ages, paces and experience came together one evening per week to run together. The club would run on the road, trails, and through the cemeteries at times. The group started off strong but then began to fade after about two years. Although the club did not meet formally, many people became friends and continued to train together.
The Manistee Recreation Association restarted the idea of the running club in 2020. Again, old and new members began to come together. The club met in downtown Manistee for a three to five mile run. Sunshine, rain, snow (and even a pandemic)- members figured out a way to join for a group run. The Manistee Run Club (MRC) evolved out of the MRA organization by community members to sustain the club. We saw the need (and want) for the club to continue to meet. Members felt the need for accountability and growth not to mention social interaction.
In 2021, MRC officially formed a board of individuals to help the club continue to grow and evolve. Keeping the club inclusive and supportive for all is the focus, as well as community involvement. The club has options for “speed” workouts, leisure runs, long runs, and trail adventures. MRC posts “highlight” races on their Facebook page to keep members up-to-date about upcoming races and events (must join the page to see these). Racing together and keeping the fun of running ongoing is also a part of the club experience. Often the club will come together for a post-run beverage and BBQ. More events and ideas to come!
